Lon Lane brings his signature culinary flair to Powell Gardens
For more than 20 years, visitors have flocked to Powell Gardens, Kansas City’s botanical garden, for the inspiring scenery. In 2011, they’ll be just as likely to come for the culinary adventures that await. Beginning Jan. 15, Lon Lane’s Inspired Occasions at Powell Gardens will operate Café Thyme and serve as exclusive caterer for all garden events, including weddings.
Café Thyme’s new menu was developed by Inspired Occasion’s chef Jeff Troiola, who most recently was with the Carriage Club in Kansas City. Troiola, a native of Chicago, attended the Culinary Institute of America and has 25 years of experience at venues ranging from Dallas’ Crecent Club to Hotel Jerome in Aspen.
“It’s a chef’s dream to have a place like the Heartland Harvest Garden for local ingredients,” Troiola says. “Our menu will change on a regular basis and we’ll try to serve as many fresh, made-from-scratch items as possible.”
The new menu features soup, salad and half sandwich combos, with options from a housemade veggie burger to a Mediterranean wrap with feta cheese and roasted vegetables. Starters include potato and goat cheese pierogies, chickpea “fries” and steamed edamame; new sides include couscous-vegetable salad and cole slaw with pecans and spicy chili dressing. Café Thyme is open 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday through Sunday throughout the winter, with daily hours resuming in the spring.
Lon Lane’s Inspired Occasions at Powell Gardens will present its first special occasion dining on Feb. 12 with a Valentine’s Dinner in the Grand Hall and Conservatory. The evening features five gourmet courses, champagne and wine throughout, hand-crafted chocolates and live classical guitar music. The price is $115 per person and includes all taxes and gratuities.
Lane founded The Catering Company in 1991, serving Kansas City’s most prominent citizens and corporations. Since then, the name has changed, but he continues to be among the most sought-after caterers in the area.
Each year from 2002 through 2008, Lon Lane’s Inspired Occasions was voted The Best Caterer in the Kansas City Metropolitan Area by the readers of Ingram’s Magazine. Inspired Occasions was awarded Best Caterer by Kansas City Magazine in 2005 and Best Caterer by The Independent from 2004-2008, and in 2010 was chosen for the second year in a row as a Best of The Knot Pick.

Everything was quite wonderful. The servers and bartender were just the best. The food was delicious and beautifully presented.
